Dear St. Martin’s Parishioners,
It is often erroneously argued that science and faith are at odds with one another. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here are just a few recent anecdotes that point to faith and science confirming God as the ultimate source of all that is. I heard a great talk on a popular podcast by Dr. John Bergsma on science increasingly pointing towards an all-powerful, intelligent Creator. The more we learn about the origins of our universe, the origins of life on our planet and the workings of quantum physics, the more atheistic materialism looks like an absurd proposition. Reality itself points towards God as its origin. Then I read the news that scientists have recently dated the Shroud of Turin, what is believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus, and they confirmed that it is about two thousand years ago. Pollen testing also confirms that that it is a cloth originating in ancient Judea. Evidence increasingly points to the Shroud not only being the burial cloth of Jesus, but a relic of the Resurrection as well. Lastly, I had a wonderful dinner with a couple who experienced a miracle in the early 1980’s that led to the beatification of St. Faustina. The renowned doctor who treated the wife who was cured of her condition attested that there is no scientific explanation for the instantaneous and full healing that she received. The God of faith is the God of science, and the truth-seeking person finds no contradiction between the two.
I want to welcome back all our of students and faculty to school. I pray that the truths they discover this year in math, science, literature, and religion lead them to glorify the God who is the author of all truth in every field. It is a joy to see the kids back at school and I pray that it will be a year of growth in mind, body and soul.
This past Monday saw the largest non-holiday turn-out in the history of our pantry. We served over 460 families! Your donations are needed now more than ever. Please see the bulletin blurb to find out which items we are most in need of at this time. We are always looking for more volunteers to help at the pantry as well. Volunteers are especially needed on Saturdays, Sundays and Monday mornings.
In Christ,
Fr. Dave
